Greece’s public television channel, ERT, has been silent since it was shut down six days ago, even if rebellious staff continue to broadcast programs online, namely debates concerning the government and the “troika” of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
At the same time, exactly one year after June 2012’s legislative elections, the spectre of new elections are haunting Greece. A poll published in newspaper Kathimerini on June 16 puts the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn at 11.5 per cent support in intentions to vote, placing it ahead of the socialist party PASOK with 6.5 per cent but behind the New Democracy party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras with 29 per cent.

“Jaws: Free trade, blockbusters and the cultural exception”
On 14 June, EU trade ministers met behind closed doors in Luxembourg to seek a common mandate for the European Commission in the negotiations with the United States on a transatlantic free trade agreement.
Talks had stalled by mid-afternoon, as France refused to budge on the“cultural exception”, according to which television, film, and online media would be exluded from any deal with Washington. France’s obstinacy put it at odds with the views of the European Commission, Germany in particular.

The G8 meeting on June 17 and 18 near Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, concluded without the leaders of major powers having reached an agreement on the fate of Syria or its president Bashar al Assad, mostly due to the intransigence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who refused to discuss any plan involving the departure of the Syrian leader.
However, in their final press statement, the leaders said they had made progress towards an international peace conference to be held in Geneva, the date of which has not yet been set. They also agreed to pay €1.12bn of aid to Syrian refugees and condemned the violations of human rights committed by the government and rebel force.
On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space when the space shuttle Challenger launched on mission STS-7.

As one of the three mission specialists on the STS-7 mission, she played a vital role in helping the crew deploy communications satellites, conduct experiments and make use of the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite. Την ίδια μέρα, τέσσερις ειδικές οθόνες θα τοποθετηθούν στην Αίθουσα του Παρθενώνα, μία σε κάθε πλευρά της ζωφόρου, με τρισδιάστατες παραστάσεις των λίθων. Στην κατανόηση των αναπαραστάσεων των λίθων της ζωφόρου βοηθούν τα σχέδια και οι λιθογραφίες ξένων περιηγητών που προηγήθηκαν του βομβαρδισμού του Παρθενώνα το 1687 από τον Μοροζίνι, ενώ η επανασυγκόλληση σκόρπιων θραυσμάτων που βρέθηκαν οδηγούν σήμερα στην τρισδιάσταση αποκατάστασή τους με συνδυασμό πρωτοτύπων και εκμαγείων.

Τη «βασίλισσα των αιθέρων», το μεγαλύτερο Β747-8 υποδέχθηκε την Τρίτη το διεθνές αεροδρόμιο της Αθήνας «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος».
H νέα ναυαρχίδα της γερμανικής αεροπορικής εταιρείας Lufthansa έκανε το πρώτο touch-down σε ειδική τελετή παρουσία των υπουργών Ανάπτυξης Κωστή Χατζηδάκη και Τουρισμού Ολγας Κεφαλογιάννη, του γενικού διευθυντή του Διεθνούς Αερολιμένα Αθηνών (ΔΑΑ) και συνεργατών της εταιρείας.
Πρόκειται για το μεγαλύτερο σε παραγωγή επιβατικό αεροσκάφος της Μπόινγκ και είναι μια αναβαθμισμένη και μεγαλύτερου μήκους εκδοχή του κλασικού, θρυλικού 747. Η καμπίνα του έχει χωρητικότητα 358 επιβατών με 8 θέσεις First Class, 92 θέσεις Business Class και 258 Economy Class.
«Η Ελλάδα αποτελεί την ιδανική επιλογή για την παρουσίαση του αεροσκάφους, καθώς φημίζεται για τη μοναδική και γνήσια φιλοξενία της», τόνισε στέλεχος της εταιρείας κατά τη διάρκεια της παρουσίασης.
Πρόσθεσε ότι η Lufthansa, με παρουσία στην Ελλάδα περισσότερο από μισό αιώνα, «επέλεξε την Αθήνα και το αεροδρόμιο Ελ. Οι Βόρειες Σποράδες αποτελούν ένα νησιωτικό σύμπλεγμα σα φυσική συνέχεια του Πηλίου. Ως αποτέλεσμα αυτής της φυσικής συνέχειας είναι τα νησιά να είναι καταπράσινα, παρά τις φιλότιμες προσπάθειες αρκετών επίδοξων εμπρηστών.

Η πιο γνωστή παραλία του νησιού είναι οι Κουκουναριές με το προστατευόμενος δάσος να την περιβάλει. Είναι αρκετά οργανωμένη με beach bars και ξενοδοχεία. Το κακό είναι ότι δεν είναι σπάνιο το φαινόμενο να είναι τόσο γεμάτη που να μη βρίσκει κανείς να καθήσει. Σίγουρα πάντως αξίζει να την επισκεφτεί κανείς. Άλλες γνωστές παραλίες είναι ο Βρωμόλιμνος, η Μπανάνα, η Ασέληνος και το Μανδράκι. Το αστικό ΚΤΕΛ της Σκιάθου εξυπηρετεί αρκετούς προορισμούς ενώ για τη βόρεια, κυρίως, πλευρά του νησιού χρειάζεται άλλο μεταφορικό ή και σκάφος.
Το νησί είναι όμορφο και κερδίζει τον επισκέπτη. Αν θέλετε να αποφύγετε την πολυκοσμία, επισκεφτείτε το καλύτερα αρχές καλοκαιριού ή μετά τις 20 Αυγούστου. Αν πάλι σας αρέσει ο πολύς κόσμος, ειδικά μικρότερης ηλικίας, τότε δε χάνετε τίποτε να επισκεφτείτε την Σκιάθο! Στο κάτω-κάτω όλοι, πιστεύω, έχουμε κάνει ένα πέρασμα από το νησί, έστω κι από περιέργεια.

Despite its small size, glorious beaches, sophisticated capital and easy accessibility (the “island” is in fact linked to the Greek mainland via a small bridge), Lefkada remains, along with tiny Ithaca, one of the Ionian’s most unspoiled destinations.
Admittedly, the coastal towns of Nydri and Vassiliki – where large bays and consistently blustery winds attract droves of watersports fanatics – have seen some (mostly sympathetic) developments, but the majority of the island, including the sleepy villages of the Sfakiotes region, and the gorgeous former capital of Karya, has retained its authentic character. Traditional village life, centred around the local kafenio, continues, almost unchanged in more than a century.
Go in September. Prices are lower, temperatures milder, and the dramatic beaches of the island’s west coast – among the Mediterranean’s very best – will feel practically deserted.
The I.M.F. needs to rethink the present, not just the past.

Greece’s economy shrank 6 percent last year and continued contracting at a 5.6 percent rate in the first quarter of 2013. It is now more than 20 percent smaller than in 2007. Overall unemployment is 27 percent, and the rate is more than twice that for people under 25. Surely the three lenders’ economic experts understand that shrinking a shriveled economy and idling more of its potential work force will not help pay off Greece’s debts.
The stubborn insistence of European officials that nothing is wrong with this picture probably means these officials will not respond constructively to Athens’s reasonable requests for relief. But the I.M.F., having expressed some regret for past error, should see more clearly the harm being done.

Crocodilians — crocodiles, alligators, gharials, and caimans — are some of the most successful predators on the planet, as well as being very interesting looking. They possess and impressive an array of “super-sensory” adaptations that make them very effective in their preferred habitats. They are also some of my “favorite” animals — meaning that their hunting spirit and ability, as well as their preferred methods, are something that I can appreciate.
